When the pandemic began, it made a long-standing milk crisis that much worse in PA. With schools and restaurants closed, many farmers had to dump their surplus milk. We worked with Feeding Pennsylvania, the PA Department of Agriculture and others in the dairy industry to help the Dairy Farmers of PA and rescue as much as milk as possible for the charitable food network. The Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association donated several milk coolers to our partner agencies throughout our 27 counties, allowing us to take and rescue more milk for our neighbors in need.
We also have a long-standing partnership with the PA Dairymen’s Association Fill a Glass with Hope program, which delivers millions of servings of milk to food banks across PA every year.
“No one should be denied access to fresh milk, especially the children in PA who are facing hunger,” said Jane Clements-Smith, executive director of Feeding Pennsylvania. “Milk is one of the most requested items in our charitable food network and our member food banks are extremely appreciative of our dairy farmers and business leaders for investing in the Fill a Glass with Hope program so that we can purchase milk, at a reduced price, directly from local dairy farmers and distribute it to Pennsylvania families in need.”
We are proud to name the Dairy Farmers of PA as one of our 2020 Hunger Heroes. #HungerActionMonth
